Excellent coffee maker!
This is a great coffee maker - especially for someone like me who wants to make only 1 mug at a time. I've tried all different kinds of coffee makers, but they don't seem to be optimized for making a single ~8 oz mug of coffee. I always ended up brewing multiple cups of coffee and throwing the extra away to get the one good cup I wanted.

I got this aeropress for Christmas 2006 and it is great. I followed the initial instructions, but preferred my coffee a bit different. So, I experimented with grind, water temperature, amount of coffee/water, etc., until I found the right combination for *my* personal preference. I use this to make a cup of coffee, not espresso (that is, I add water to the result to get "regular" coffee), so I can't comment on the quality of espresso taste. I have noticed that coffee beans/grind from different sources have their own "sweet spots" for best grind and coffee/water quantity to get the taste I prefer. So, now that I know how I like to brew a...

Great little coffee maker
I am very picky about my coffee. I only like espressos I get at restaurants and coffee shops about half the time. If you use a standard meat thermometer to ensure the water is between 175 and 185 degrees F the result is truly outstanding. It makes great espresso as well as coffee. You can easily control the acidity by using hotter water. I have owned espresso machines ranging from $100 to $300 and this little unit beats them hands down. Fantastic product!

What they talk about Delonghi EMK6 Alicia Electric Moka Espresso Coffee Maker :

Excellent coffee -- read update ;-)
1/20/06 First reviewed: I received this as a gift and had about twenty wonderful cups of moka from this cute little electric machine, but then one day in the third week of ownership, steam went a'flyin outside of the moka maker instead of into the top chamber. I called customer service and was given a run-around, ugh. I was told that without a receipt I could buy the replacement unit for around $40 plus shipping. She said that most of their products have a 30 or 60 day warranty, which surprised me greatly. Since I'd owned the product for less than 30 days, I figured I was still in the warranty time any way one looked at it, but I was wrong. With no receipt, no exchange from DeLonghi. Well, I tried to use the unit after really tightening the top and bottom together and the escaping steam abated. The next week, the shut off valve on the heating unit started making a terrible noise and the unit wouldn't even start. It would be triggered within a few seconds to shut off, so I had...

It has a big flaw, but I love it anyway
I'm on my 2nd Electric Moka machine. The first one died when the plastic piece on top cracked near the handle and it began to leak. I realize now that it cracked from tightening the top piece by rotating the plastic handle rather than grabbing the metal mid-section. I also realize that I began tightening it extra tight when the rubber washer inside started to wear out. So that's the deal. Replace the washer when it gets ragged and don't screw the pot together with the plastic handle. Do these two things and the machine will last ages. BTW, it makes FANTASTIC espresso, is easy to clean, is compact and very cute. I love it!!!

Follow these tips for a unique coffee Every family in Italy owns one of these machines. Here are a few tips:

1. In Italy this is NOT called an espresso machine, but a Moka machine. An espresso is what you would drink in bar made with a steam or high pressure machine with the crema on top.
2. Smaller size Moka machine tend to make better coffee.
3. Never wash the Moka with detergents, just rinse it under tap water
4. You've gotta use it often for a good coffee.
5. If you haven't use it in a while, make a weak coffee ("lungo") and discard
6. DO NOT put the MOka in the dishwasher.
7. Use drinking water. Avoid tap water especially if very chlorinated
8. Never compress the coffee.
9. For a strong coffee fill the filter with ground coffee and make a small cupola that slightly protrudes beyond the rim. Do not press down.
10. For best coffee, heat at very low heat. It's ok if it takes 10min.

The best -- straight from Italy!

About 12 years ago I was in Milan, and a friend gave me one of these to take home. I have used it nearly every day since (I don't take it out of town), so that should give you an idea of how sturdy it is. It is the best coffee maker I have ever owned. To compare, I also have a high-tech espresso machine with frother; a state-of-the-art automatic drip coffeemaker; a French Press; and a different style of stovetop maker, which, surprisingly, makes a different brew. But I ALWAYS go back to my Bialetti Moka 6-cup for the best espresso and lattes. You even will get a crema effect with this simple pot. For lattes, I simply fill half a coffee mug with milk, heat it in the microwave until it's hot, and then top it off with espresso. It's low-maintenance -- every once in a while I replace the internal rubber gasket, which costs a buck or so, depending upon where you buy it. If you like your coffee like the Italians and the Cubans, then you will like the brew this serves. I am loyal to this

A Relief After Tons of Searching!

Like most who purchased this product, it was my first espresso maker. And I found out quickly that hunting for these things can be overwhelming! I purchased it at my local Target for $79.99 for convenience in case I had to return it -- with all of the mixed reviews out there, I was incredibly weary of choosing one! However, I will most likely not need to do so. It is perfect for all of my needs!

PROS:
1. Incredibly easy to use! Directions and trouble-shooting pages in manual are simple and helpful.
2. Compact size, looks nice sitting on the counter.
3. Easy clean-up. All parts that need to be cleaned detach easily.
4. A standard sized coffee cup will fit under the spout -- not so with many models!
5. The steam feature is simple, fairly powerful, and works well. No problems here.
6. As long as you get a good batch of coffee grounds, this machine can turn it into delicious espresso!

CONS:
1. I have been experiencing a small leak...

Mr. Coffee really did their homework on this one

I received this for Christmas from my loving wife who noticed a slight cloud over my weekends since my espresso maker went out several months ago. I had the Mr. Coffee model previous to this one. It served me well for over a year with regular use before I learned the hard way about not overpacking the grounds.

After taking this one around the block a few times I have to say I'm extremely impressed with the design improvements they've made. Overall, this machine is a tremendous value for under $100 (mine was $75 on sale). You would really have to be a coffee snob (and have a lot of disposable income) not to love what you get for the money (I'm a poor coffee snob.)

To sing this machine's praises, I'll highlight the improvments they've made:

1) You no longer have to remove the water container to fill it up. It's an awkward shape to try to fill from my refrigerator. So I just use my frothing pitcher and pour directly into it. This also chills the...

Even Improving Upon Aeropress

I have been loving my Aeropress for over a year now and have one for work and one for home. Compared to the French press, the Aeropress definitely improves the quality and efficiency of the brewing experience. However, even so, the paper filters are the weakness in my opinion. I've seen the other steel filter out for awhile for the Aeropress but didn't try it because reviews I had read stated it was too porous and let too much grit thru. However, when I saw this on Kickstarter and read the pre-review from Marco Arment ([...]), it sounded like this problem had been solved because the mesh was fine enough to keep most of the grit out. I've had my S Filter for a week now and have pressed at least 20 times thru it. I think Nate & John have nailed it. The back pressure is about right when pressing and I feel that I can taste a difference with my routine press recipe (below). I feel like there is definitely more flavor in the cup and while a super fine residue remains if you leave...

Regarding breakage

I ordered one of these filters in November, and within a couple weeks of daily use and careful hand-washing it started to come apart.

Needless to say I was pretty disappointed. However, the filter was still functional, as it's more or less held together when the aeropress parts are assembled. So, honestly, at that point it was primarily a cosmetic irritation. I was annoyed, but I still wasn't sure that I was free of blame. Had I misused it? Had I thrown it in the dishwasher? Would the dishwasher be enough to ruin the filter? I didn't know, so I wasn't quick to write the seller and complain.

Eventually I did send them a note, and they were absolutely great to deal with. They replaced my filter hassle-free.

By this time I'd figured out what the issue was; the mesh of the filter is adhered to a metal ring. In the amazon picture you can see what I consider to be the bottom of the filter. You can see it appears to be 'stitched' to a ring. My advice to...

Wish it were hotter

I really wanted to give this a better review. This is a very convenient coffee maker and fits nicely into a carry on bag or suitcase. It makes one cup of coffee at a time.

My major concern here is that the coffee isn't very hot. It takes a long time to brew and I suspect that is a factor in the final temperature of the coffee. The coffee itself tastes fine, just not as hot as I would like.

Works really well

I've tried a number of methods to make my own first-rate, early-AM coffee when traveling worldwide. This is the best I've found so far. I use about 3/4 tablespoon of espresso-ground coffee per cup and get a full, rich taste. I was highly surprised and pleased when the maker almost worked right when I inadvertently plugged it into 240-volt European current with the voltage setting still at 120 - there was a lot of spluttering and a bit of a mess, but the machine thankfully did not die on the spot. But I would say that the voltage button should be located just below the on-off button, to remind you visibly about the voltage, not on the opposite hidden side. The only other small downside I found was a quite distinct plastic taste from the supplied cup that didn't go away soon with washing. I use my own ceramic cup now, placing the supplied one under the spout to collect the few lingering drops. Very inventive, attractive and functional design. Excellent device.

What they talk about DeLonghi ESAM3300 Magnifica Super-Automatic Espresso/Coffee Machine :

One of the Best Super Automatics Out There for the Price

I have the EAM3200, which is the previous model version. The differences are slight but noticeable to the newer. These machines are the best in class for price and performance, produce a great espresso, and are maintainable in ways that other manufacturers models are not. The coffee from the Delonghi is just as good as from Jura and even some manual models such as Expobar and Rancillo. It is very close to what you find in Italy - not quite, but for the price it is worth it. Great crema, hot temperature, rich flavor. And the best part is you can pull out the brew mechanism and clean it - VERY key. This will ensure sound operation and function for many years.

In order to keep this machine is fine working order, you need to do a bit of upkeep each week and use the right beans.

1. Only use non-oily, 100% Arabica beans. If you use oily beans it will clog frequently and attract rancid flavors. It will also shorten the life of the machine. I use Illy, but any espresso...

Nearly perfect.

Now, after six years...

The machine does develop leaks... I ordered a couple of sizes of silicone O-rings and spring clips from McMaster-Carr and go in a couple of times a year to replace them. I should find a size that works better. We also had to replace the original gear-driven grinder when it wore out completely. The newer design belt driven grinder is SO MUCH quieter!! It's worth repairing this machine is it gets older. It still makes amazing espresso and coffee.

This is an update after three years of using our Magnifica.

We bought our Magnifica after using a similar machine while visiting friends in Germany. We have been using it for over 3 years now, and are still quite happy with it. My wife and I both drink a lot of coffee -- tall Americanos most of the day. I am a full time telecommuter, so I will average 3-5 a day in winter, 2-4 in summer. We also love being able to fill a couple of 16 oz. insulated cups before leaving on a road trip...
